About the event
Crisis in Our City is hosting a public conversation with Rev. Maggie Helwig. The event will focus on encampments, unsheltered homelessness, shelter and housing policy, and the need for responses rooted in dignity and community.
The conversation will invite participants to look beyond the common portrayal of encampments as only a problem or tragedy. Encampments demonstrate the urgent need for safe, accessible and permanent housing. They can also be understood as responses to a shelter and housing system that is not meeting people’s needs.
The conversation will ask: What can the experience of people living in encampments teach us about the issues with current shelter and housing policies?
Guests from Toronto’s interfaith community will join Rev. Helwig. Together, they will discuss encampments, displacement, public policy, solidarity and the role of community advocacy.
